A Light Path Through the Dark Gym

Free · 8 scenes

After the last bell, a dull sound came from the gym — THUD… thud… In the half-dark hall, a single swallow was beating against the high window glass, again and again. “It's looking for a way out. But why the glass, and not the open door—?” Then the teacher noticed your field card. “You — you're with the Rescue Notes team, aren't you? Please. Think this through with me.”

The custodian spread his arms and tried to herd it — and the startled swallow flew at the glass even faster. THUD. …Thud. The gaps between the sounds were growing longer than before. Its strength was running out. Outside, the wind moaned and lightning flickered far away. It had to be out before the storm — but how?

You dial the number on the back of the field card, and a voice came through the static: Aoi, the senior member of the Rescue Notes team. “Chasing makes things worse. Clear glass — or sky reflected in it — can look like an exit to a bird. Have an adult cover every window except the exit, turn off the lights, and open just one way out where the outside light is visible. Then everyone backs away and keeps still.” The static surged. “Ready, You? Only the Rescue Notes member on scene can build a safe plan.” — And the line went dead.

You look around the gym. High windows run along the east side and the west side. Beyond the east windows: a streetlight and the moon. Beyond the west windows: storm clouds, pitch black. On the wall, the light switchboard — all on, half, all off. The custodian rests a hand on the stepladder. “Choose the window, and I'll do the opening.” Above you, the swallow is still circling the lamps that remain lit.

Build a path of light from lamps and windows

This is a plan-card simulation; nothing is being tried on the real swallow yet. Choose the lights, the window an adult would open, and everyone's movement. Use the predicted result to improve the plan.

What happens to the lights?
Which high window do we open?
And how do we move?

No one tries anything on the real swallow yet. The teacher and custodian back away while you test three predictions on the plan card only: What happens to the lights? Which window does an adult open? How does everyone move? A card can be reset again and again. The real plan must proceed one careful step at a time, watching the bird. In Aoi's small handwriting: “The answer lives in darkness and stillness.”
