The Case of the Vanished Pudding

Free · 10 scenes

The kitchen, early afternoon. Empty… or so it seemed — until a large shadow tiptoed in. It opened the fridge and took — the pudding with the little bear sticker. Big Brother's pudding! Gulp. Lick. Gone in seconds, and the lid went deep, deep into the trash. Then the shadow looked THIS way — and put a finger to its lips. "Shhh." …Wait. Who WAS that?

Snack time. "My pudding is GOOOONE!!" Big Brother's howl shook the house. "I KNOW I put it in the fridge!" Just then, Goma the cat came padding by — and licked her lips. "AH! It was GOMA! Goma ate it!" Goma just blinked. "Nya?" was all she said. Cats can't defend themselves.

"Wait." A small voice came from the corner of the living room. It was little sister Hinata, casebook in her arms. "A detective never assumes. The most suspicious-looking one isn't always the culprit." She readied her pencil — and then looked straight at YOU. "Hey, assistant. If you saw anything… tell me later, okay?"

The interviews began. "Mom?" "Hanging laundry in the garden." "Big Brother?" "Homework! I was in my room the WHOLE time!" "…Dad?" Dad answered from behind his newspaper. "D-Dad was doing work emails. The whole time. Honest." …Hey, assistant. Could the shadow be someone in this room?

Where are the clues in the kitchen? 2 to go

"Back to the scene, assistant." Hinata and YOU set out to search the kitchen. Look closely — clues are always small. Somewhere there must be traces of things a cat simply cannot do. When you spot one, tap-tap!

Hinata wrote slowly in her casebook. "Goma can't open the fridge. Peeling a lid and hiding it deep in the trash? Even less. Only a TALL human could. A tall human… with a golden pudding smudge on his mustache." The newspaper began to tremble. On Dad's forehead: one bead of sweat.

6 / 10

Hinata snapped the casebook shut and whispered so only you could hear: "Answer time, assistant. Someone tall enough to open the fridge. Someone with a mustache. You know who the shadow was… don't you?" She rose — and walked straight toward the newspaper.

Hinata didn't shout it to the room. She slipped to Dad's side and whispered, tiny as a mouse: "There's a pudding smudge… on your mustache." The newspaper froze. Dad's face went red as a tomato. No pointing, no shouting — a quiet word is Hinata's way of being a detective.

Dad wiped his mustache — and stood straight up. "An announcement! The one who ate the pudding was… ME! I'm sorry!!" One beat of silence — then the whole house burst out laughing. For a confession made all by himself, Mom led the loudest applause. Big Brother fumed. "Nya?" said Goma.

That evening Dad came home with three puddings — and a whole pack of treats for Goma. "Sorry we doubted you, Goma." As Big Brother stroked her head, Goma purred like a little engine. Hinata winked at YOU and wrote in the casebook: one big circle. Case closed. See you on the next case, assistant.
